Search-and-Rescue Operation

The LPG tanker ENERGEIA, one of the vessels in the Island Oil Holdings fleet, actively contributed to the rescue of four persons on the 30th of December 2019, 18 nautical miles southwest of Kea island in the Aegean Sea. Battered by 8-9 Beaufort scale winds, a sailboat issued a distress call after being rendered powerless due to mechanical damage and shredded sails.
The Greek Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter while three vessels, among them the ENERGEIA, arrived at the scene ready to intervene.
The gale-force winds persisted, hindering rescue efforts. After multiple failed attempts by the helicopter, the ENERGEIA was able to maneuver into position to rescue one of the persons onboard the sailboat.
The Hellenic Coast Guard helicopter was eventually able to rescue the other three persons, marking the end of the successful operation.
In a letter addressed to the Master of the LPG tanker ENERGEIA, the Hellenic Coast Guard expressed “sincere gratitude” for the vessel’s contribution and assistance to the search-and-rescue operation. “This action is consistent with the principles of humanism and solidarity, proving your strong commitment to the long-lasting values of seamanship”, the letter said in its conclusion.
